Over the [Button] Rainbow

I’ve been seeing a lot of rainbow-inspired button art kicking around on Pinterest lately, and I thought I’d make my own.

I included my fave crafty sidekick a.k.a. Kid #1. She is the best.

Step 1: Put on your Christmas PJ’s  and draw the outline of a rainbow. I traced a bunch of different sized lids to make it perfect. Kid #1 just wung it. (Or would that be “winged it” or “wang it”?)

Step 2: Color in the rainbow:

OMG. Mine is SO much better…

Step 3: Buttons+glue=me+you= Love, do you hear me? See, I do remember Math 10.

Step 4: You can add clouds, or you can write “Mercie” in swirly, pink letters. Either-or, really 😉

Step 5: Frame without the glass- ISN’T THAT CUTE???

This piece of artwork would be perfect to brighten up that little spot in your hallway that needs a ray of sunshine. Or you could give it to a gay baby as a baby shower gift… wouldn’t it look cute on a nursery wall?

Now, while I’m here, I’ll share a little turquoise button tree I made for a sweet gal named Flora:

‘Flora’ is my fave girl name right now. It is so pretty and classic, unique but not crazy. (Not that I’m opposed to crazy.)  And on that note, I gotta get knocked up again.  😉  Happy Button gluing!

Button Clock

Today I had a hankering to destroy something, then reincarnate it into something beautiful. And this clock fell into my line of fire.

Don’t be fooled by its sleek simplicity poking through the tulips. I had to stare at this boring 3 dollar clock for over a year.

My last clock was glorious…

but unfortunately it was attacked by an autistic boy, and I have been missing it ever since. 😦

Now, if you want to make a boring clock pretty, the first thing you gotta do is dissect it.

It helps if you have a random plastic mystical animal standing by to encourage you. This is Samuthél, my crafting mascot.

Cut out a circle of yer fave nice paper. You’ll have to do some tricky cutting to sneak it over the hands of the clock. I pushed a hole through the centre of the paper and cut a small slit going out from there. Then I glued it in place.

Next, arrange some buttons around the clock. Make sure they are not too thick, or else the hands will get stuck.

Then pick some better buttons and hot glue them in place. Mark out the perfect spots to put them. You want this clock to be accurate after all, although I do love to confuse people.

Put the clock back together and there you have it! A reincarnated button clock! Finally, a clock I can look at without getting angry… but there is just one final step…

Samuthél approves!

Valentine’s Bacon Roses

You know that old saying, “Nothing says ‘take me now, Valentine.’ like flowers fashioned out of pork products.”? Well, it’s true. And I def. won the wife of the year award today. Today I made bacon roses, my friends. And you can too!

bacon roses vday

Here’s how you do it!

All you gotta do is poke some holes in the bottom of a foil pan or muffin tin, then place it in a baking dish. Next, roll up some bacon like this, using the fatty side as the top of the pork-bud. Secure with toothpicks, and pop em in a 350 degree oven for about an hour. While you are waiting, make eggs benedict. My husband’s fave food is eggs benedict, so I’ve tried to perfect it over the years… use some thinly sliced and fried honey ham and it will be so delish. Make sure to use America’s Test Kitchen’s hollandaise recipe. (I’ll post it later.) It is the tastiest and it’s sooper easy too 🙂 After the delicate fleurs are done baking, transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate, remove the toothpicks, and let em cool a bit. Then dissect a fake bunch of roses. You can reserve the petals for a sooooper classy romantic evening. Ew. Fill a vase with some rocks or glass pebbles and stand the naked rose bush up in it. Place the salty blooms on the stems, and serve! (How many times have you read THAT last sentence before?) Happy Valentine’s Day!!!! Hollandaise Sauce (America’s Test Kitchen): 3 large egg yolks 1 TBsp fresh lemon juice 16 TBsp (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and still warm Hot water 1/8 tsp. cayenne Blend egg yolks and lemon juice in blender till frothy – 10 seconds +/-. With blender running, slowly drizzle in HALF of the butter until mixture is quite thick. Blend 2 tsp. of hot water. Continuing to blend, add remaining butter, about a minute. Blend additional water until sauce coats the back of a spoon. Stir in cayenne, salt and pepper.
