GIVEAWAY! Win a Four Seasons Button Tree!

In celebration of hitting 5000 likes on my Facebook page, I wanted to do a giveaway!!! One of my more popular paintings has been my Four Seasons Button Tree, in both the long version, and the square version:

457134_197288103731169_2138452240_oI painted this long one on four 7″x14″ canvases.

317639_239143596212286_429401813_n-2And I painted this square one on four 8″x10″ canvases.

I asked my Facebook fans to vote for which version should be the prize, but with over 500 votes casted, I’ve decided I’m too lazy to tally them up, so howsabouts this: The WINNER can choose which one they want!!! SO if you want to have a chance to win one of these Four Seasons Button Trees, check out the post that is pinned to the top of my Facebook page HERE for instructions. Good luck 🙂

Up, Up and Away!

I wanted to make something for an extra-special boy who happens to love the movie ‘Up’. You might even call him ‘Up-sessed’. HAHAHAA! See what I did there? Okay, enough of the mom-jokes, I’ll show you what I made:

upgood

IT WAS SO FUN!

I took a few pictures of the progress, so I thought I’d share a super-quick tutorial with you.

IMG_1632

Firstly, I sketched out a version of the Up house. I did this on an 8×10 canvas board, which you can get at any craft store.

IMG_1633

Nextly, (I am ignoring the spell-check red squiggles, because I happen to like the word ‘nextly’) I filled in the house with acrylic craft paints, then outlined it and added details with a black permanent marker.

As you can see, I kept the house a bit warbley and imperfect. I really like that style! I also like the word ‘warbley’, and I wont be bullied into changing it, SPELLCHECK! 😡  Spellcheck’s gonna hate, ain’t no body got time for that!

OH! A.D.D. interjection! I just remembered I was going to edit something funny… one sec!

slater

Hahahahaha! Hahahaha. This popped into my mind one evening while I was trying to sleep (even my insomnia is entertaining!), although upon further investigation, I see that a few other people have already thought of this… Oh well, it was new to me, so I’m taking credit for that hilarious meme. 😉

Back to business.

IMG_1650

I added some button balloons, which don’t hold much helium, but they look great. I used hot glue for this step. Don’t burn yourself. Unless you’re into that kind of thing 😉 Whatever that means! Sometimes I just say stuff…. anyways…

IMG_1640

I think this white frame suits the picture perfectly! You will want to leave the glass out, since the  buttons are 3-D. One gal, who ordered these button cupcakes actually framed them in a shadow box- so it kept the artwork super safe and clean, but didn’t squash the texture. She planned on hanging them above her stove, so it really made sense, but if you are just hanging your picture in a nursery or dungeon etc. you don’t have to worry.

I can’t wait to deliver this project! I hope he flips out… or UP!

Happy buttoning, friends!

~Dot

OH P.S.!! I should mention that I still have a HUGE sale going on over at my Etsy shop! If you want 25% off of some pretty, nifty and unique jewelry, just use the code ’25OFF’ at the checkout! Seriously- you can get a cool necklace or pair of earrings for 8 bucks- help me clear out some room so I can support my craft supply addiction stock some new items. 🙂 Click this photo to be swept away to my magical shop:

Button Fire Truck

Hi fellas! I’m excited to share my latest 100% button project with you!

IMG_1622

It’s a button fire truck!!! I haven’t been doing too many projects this summer, because I’ve been busy with the fam. I hope you are all having a fabulous summer. We are having a blast. Here is photographic evidence of our fun in the sun:

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 9.06.15 AM

…more like depression in the recession, but at least I look good, right? It is so hard to get a photo with all of my kids… let-alone one where they are all happy! I think I’ll just stick to selfies from now on… like this one:

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 9.05.30 AM

Baby’s first selfie!!!!! I’m so proud.

Okay, enough about me, let’s talk about you. You want to make this button fire truck for your son who loves fire trucks, or your uncle who was a fire chief? Perfect. Let’s get started!

IMG_1586

The first step to creating any button picture like this is to draw out your image. Keep it as simple as you can, and draw it out on paper first, until you get an image you like. Feel free to use my designs, just give me a shout-out if yer nice. And try to sell them as ‘unique button art’ if you are not nice.

The possibilities with this craft are endless- Here is some of the artwork I’ve created using only buttons:

buttoncollage (click the collage to see my Facebook album with even more! And while yer at it, LIKE ME! REALLY, REALLY LIKE ME!)

Back to the fire truck… no more interruptions, I promise!

IMG_1601 After you’ve copied your image onto an 8×10 canvas board, thin out some paint and begin to add color!

IMG_1602 This is a pretty important step, although it doesn’t need to be perfect, the idea is to not have any white showing through the button holes.

Speaking of buttons…

IMG_1603 I love them. My absolute favorite buttons for this kind of project are called ‘Favorite Findings’ by Blumenthal Lansing, and you can get them from Joann.com (AND THEY ARE ON SALE FOR 50% OFF, I SEE!!!) They are nice and flat, and come in perfect colors! So snatch those up before the sale ends.

IMG_1605 Now you must start buttoning!!! To see a more-detailed tutorial I did on this process, you can check out my button elephant tutorial here. Or you can check out a freakkkishly detailed massive tutorial of my button mermaid here.

IMG_1606 My #1 tip for filling in a picture with buttons is to start around the edges, and work your way in. Overlap where you need to, and you will get a nice, crisp edge.

IMG_1607 And eventually you will wind up with something worth framing!!!

IMG_1620

I hope you found this tutorial helpful and/or inspiring!

Since I’ve got you here, I wanted to share a little preview of something I’m working on for Autumn!

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 9.05.45 AMI created these tiny acorn earrings out of felted wool balls and real acorn caps! Cuteness overload. I can’t wait to list them in my Etsy shop in September 🙂

Speeeaaakking of my Etsy shop, I am trying to clear out some stuff to make way for my Fall/Winter collection, so if you want some fun/cute/pretty/unique earrings etc. head over to my shop and use the code ’25OFF’ at the check out to get 25% off of everything!!! You can find my shop right HERE.

Well, I should stop ignoring children… I’m good at that. I’ll share a pic my sis just took now, so you can have a behind-the-scenes look at how I work…

real

Soccer mom hair, check. Pajamas, check. Eyebrows in desperate need of plucking, check. Toddler getting a computer screen-tan, check! Mom of the year, I know.

If you’re interested in some more behind-the-scenes info about me, you should check out the interview I did for the lovely ladies at Tansy Dolls!

SO, Happy Fire-trucking and eyebrow-plucking!
