Busted Buttercream (Couture)

I am SO excited to share something amazing with you!!! My awesome friend, Melissa from Buttercream Couture (you NEED to check out her creations) and I collaborated on a very special cake. We only get to see each other a couple of times a year, so we decided that this meeting would be a perfect opportunity to get creative together! SO we married our individual art forms to create the ultimate love-child masterpiece:

A button tree cake!

Check out those details!

This was so much fun- and a real learning experience for me, since I’ve never worked with fondant! While I shaped the branch, Melissa molded and painted these great antique-looking buttons and leaves. She is the master of achieving the perfect colors and texture.

We had a blast positioning the fondant buttons on the branch. We used gin to glue them onto their perfect positions. I dared Melissa to shoot the leftover gin, which had turned into a colorful, syrupy slime, so I suppose it’s easy to see why she turned that dare down. I still think she’s a wimp. That whole “but I’m driving you to the ferry in 5 minutes” excuse is so overdone.

Big thanks to Frances, of Frances Eden Creative for taking these awesome photos! They turned out so well that I will forgive her for making the rest of the photos on my site look like garbage. She is an amazing photographer and you can check out her stuff here.

And that was the most fun I’ve had in a long time!!! Thanks for letting me get my hands all over your delicious cake, Melissa!
